Your ultimate guide to watching Comedy of Errors at the RSC’s outdoor theatre this summer

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate.

As Shakespeare said himself, summertime is a lovely season, bringing sunshine, warmer weather and also the reopening of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.

From 13th July, the RSC will be running Phillip Breen’s production of Comedy of Errors, described as ‘a fairytale farce of everyday’, until 26th September in the newly built Lydia & Manfred Gorvy Garden Theatre.

To help you have the best open-air theatre experience possible, we’ve gathered our top tips for planning your visit including where to park, what to bring and where to stay.

1. Before you arrive: Dress to impress in the outdoors

Whether you choose to book the matinee or evening performance of Comedy of Errors, you’ll want to make sure you’re dressed for a classic British summer. And this often means several seasons in one day!

Despite warm afternoons, evenings can dip in temperature so it’s best to wear appropriate clothes and pack a warm accessory such as a scarf that could also double as a blanket. It’s also worth noting that The Garden Theatre does not have a roof and performances will only be cancelled if there are any safety concerns. So if rain is forecast it’s worth packing a raincoat – although biodegradable ponchos will be available to buy on arrival at the theatre.

2. What to bring: Take only the essentials

There is no need to pack any chairs or rugs to watch this performance. The Lydia & Manfred Gorvy Garden Theatre is built in the Swan Gardens, with safe seating for up to 500 people all offering great views of the stage.

However as the cloakroom will be closed, it’s advised to keep any personal items to a minimum if possible. Refreshments are available at the theatre.

3. Post performance: Keep the fun going with a luxury hotel break
